UX metric and how to measure it, with example

Have you ever looked at your most used software and thought why the menu is arranged this way, how can you make it better? Have you ever wished it to be different? Ever thought why a menu item gets highlighted when you hover your mouse pointer on it? What if it did not highlight, will you like it that way?

Usability: what makes your app/software unusable? How not to do that?
Involving the user from early stage of design and development.
How to test that?
What other measures to test?
-How easily they learn?
-How many mistakes they make?
-Do they follow the pattern you want them to follow?
-Observe them, see if they show any sign of discontentment.
-Also measure mouse movement, how long it takes the user to move the mouse from current location to the desired location. Can they find the buttons immediately? Or do they have to look for it?
-Is it something people use everyday? Or once in a while? In that case will they remember how to use it? Who are your target audience? Do you know your users' cultural background? Do they use metric system or FPS? Does your system support both? Is it customizable?
Which features are most useful? Do your users know these features exist? Or do they have to go through a user manual for it?

Why does it matter: Because people will not buy o use your product if they have better option. Think about browsers:  1. Tab: firefox and chrome, IE had it later. People use IE to download firefox.
